Hua quo they called themselves - the Sojourners. They came in search of wealth to support their families back home. They had dreams of turning rich to live out their final years in their villages, revered by families and friends. However, most died in the cold valleys of a foreign land - British Columbia. They were robbed, beaten and feared by the dominant Caucasian society. 

Lily Chow's book Sojourners in the North brings us forward from those early days of Chinese settlement to present day when Chinese citizens are honored and celebrated for their contributions to life in their communities in British Columbia. 

Author

Lily Chow was born in Malaysia but has lived in Canada since the mid-sixties. She has taught in the Prince George School District and at the University of British Columbia. She now devotes her time to research and writing. Her first book, 'Sojourners in the North', won the Jeanne Clark Local History Award and is used as a textbook in many colleges and universities. 'Chasing Their Dreams' is her second book.
